Insomnia, a Common Sleeping Disorder

Trouble Sleeping?

Sleep Problems

Have trouble sleeping? Always tossing and turning in your bed? Sleep problems are common in our society today. Don't despair. You have many options. But be careful. Some are good choices, other are not.

What is Sleep? Insomnia, Common Sleeping Disorders

Sleep is an act performed by everyone: humans, all other mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and even fish. It is essential to everyday life. It gives the body a chance to rest, physically and mentally, suspends all muscle movement and internal cell synthesis. When sleep does not come naturally, people often resort to insomnia medications to help induce sleep.

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia a sleep disorder characterized by the lack of the ability to fall asleep and/or stay asleep for a normal amount of time.

Causes of Insomnia

Insomnia is a disorder caused by drugs, drug addiction, anxiety, depression, personal stress, jet lag, and many other causes.

New Sleeping Pill

There is good news about insomnia. Rozerem (ramelteon) is the first new sleep aid medication to come on the market in 35 years. It can be a good choice for you if you can't sleep. Rozerem works differently from other sleeping pills. It affects those chemicals in you brain which cause you to fall asleep. The melatonin receptors are stimulated, making sure your body's internal clock works properly, telling you when it is time to get tired. Rozerem can be prescribed for chronic insomnia. Rozerem is not addictive and can be prescribed for long term use.

Sleeping Pill

Other prescription sleep pills besides Rozerem can also be effective, at the same time they’re dangerous. Addiction and dependency are the number one side effect and can set in instantaneously if you are not careful.

Using drugs that affect the way you sleep means playing with one of the most important parts of the human body’s daily cycle. Because these drugs are powerful, they can also mess up different stages of your sleep cycle. The R.E.M. (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep is very important. The stage 4 cycle is the deep sleep cycle of sleep which actually lets your body rest and recharge for the next day. Prescription drugs can damage these cycles, leading to drowsiness the following day and a vicious cycle of insomnia the next night.

Sedatives and Tranquilizers

Different types of prescription sleeping aids are made for different purposes. The two general categories are short term sedatives and tranquilizers. These two types have short and long term affects, respectively. The danger comes into play when the drug doesn’t wear off in the time the user wants it to. Waking up in the morning can be extremely difficult if a tranquilizer drug is taken, and can itself have side affects throughout the day, such as drowsiness, nausea, headaches, and memory loss.

Serotonin

Serotonin is one of the keys to sleep. It’s a neurotransmitter in the brain that is responsible for many emotions and actions such as sleeping, vomiting, sexuality, mood, anger, and appetite. Many of these sleep drugs affect serotonin levels in the brain, thereby pulling some nasty side effects into the equation. Disrupting serotonin levels can lead to mental disorders, depression, and disease.

Over the Counter Insomnia Medications

Over the counter insomnia drugs are another option in mild cases. These medications also have side effects, but usually less severe than prescription medicines.

There are several drugs on the market that are used for sleeping aids, whether they are meant to be used for that symptom or not. Some medications for pain or the common cold cause drowsiness in some people, others feel no such effect. These medications are sometimes used to treat insomnia.

Other Uses

Sleeping aids can be used for purposes other than sedating. Often times these drugs are used to help reduce pain, calm anxieties and fears, and pre-surgery. While the medicines don’t necessarily reduce these ailments, inducing drowsiness often helps calm the intensity of them.

Natural Sleep Aids, Tips and Tricks on Sleeping

In order to get better sleep, the best solution is to do it naturally, without medication. Here’s what you can do to ensure a good night’s sleep.

  • Don’t drink caffeine beverages in the evening
  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule
  • Be comfortable: a comfortable bed and temperature
  • Exercise a few hours before bed
  • Bed association: use the bed for only sleeping so it is associated directly with sleeping

Routine

Routine will help achieve healthy sleep. If your schedule prevents routine sleep, try to get as close to a routine as possible. Know how much sleep it takes for you to function normally. The average adult still needs about 8 hours of sleep, while some can get along with as little as 5 and others need as much at 10 hours per night.

Naps

If sleep deprivation becomes a problem, trying resting to make up for it. Take small naps for short term recovery and sleep consistently longer for several days in a row to make up for a certain amount of sleep lost. If this does not work, then possibly resort to sleeping pills or see you doctor.
